MEASURE

A term used to describe the width of a block of
type, traditionally measured in points, picas, or
ems, although millimeters and pixels are also
used in some contexts. The optimum measure
with regard to legibility is generally considered
to be 52 to 78 characters (the equivalent of two
to three alphabets), including spaces, although
factors such as leading, letter spacing, and
the typeface itself must also be considered.

MEAN LINE
ˈmēn ˈlīn, n
A reference line used for the proper horizontal
alignment of type, corresponding to the x-
height of a given typeface. The upper edges
of those lowercase letters having no ascend-
ers lie along the mean line, or very nearly so.
In fact, only the fl at-topped lowercase letters,
such as u and x, end at the mean line. Those
with rounded tops, such as a and o, actu-
ally extend slightly beyond the mean line.
A similar “optical illusion” is used along the
baseline; both cases illustrate the importance
of visual alignment over precision alignment
when it comes to fi ne typography.
