LASER CUT

A process by which a computer-guided
high-powered laser is used to etch into or
cut through sheets of paper, wood, plastics,
and even some metals. Laser cutting is very
precise, accommodating a greater level of
intricate detail than can conventional die
cutting. And because there is no metal die
involved, laser cutting can be less costly and
more expedient than die cutting for very small
production runs. Costs can increase dramati-
cally, however, for extremely detailed work or
when working with “diffi cult” materials, such
as those that are easily scorched or melted,
very thick, and so forth.

stickers and decals. Cuts are made in a
printed sheet of paper without cutting into
its backing, thereby allowing the stickers
or decals to be removed from the backing.

KERNING
ˈkər-niŋ, v
Adjusting the space between two adjacent
characters to create a visually appealing
rhythm. When certain characters, such as
T and o, are set together, the interaction
of their shapes creates a distracting gap.
Kerning is used to tighten the spacing, result-
ing in a more natural look. Kerning pairs are
commonly used pairs of letters that require
kerning for proper spacing (a task generally
handled automatically by software applica-
tions, though not always to the satisfaction of
designers and typographers).
