TYPEFACE

A character set that shares obvious de-
sign characteristics, such as stroke weight,
proportions, presence or lack of serifs, and
so forth. A typeface typically includes letters
(often uppercase and lowercase), numerals,
and a wide range of symbols (typographi-
cal, mathematical, etc.). Typeface and font
are often mistakenly used interchangeably.
Typeface refers to the overall design of the
characters; fonts are the means of produc-
tion, whether mechanical, photomechanical,
or digital.

forth. The broad range of “family members”
available is largely a consequence of the

TYPE CLASSIFICATION

Any one of various systems used to cat-
egorize typefaces based upon their shared
visual characteristics, such as the presence
or lack of serifs, similarity to handwriting, and
so on. Because many typefaces can fi t into
more than one category, such classifi cation
systems are best understood as broad gener-
alizations rather than rigid defi nitions.
