READABILITY
ˌrē-də-ˈbi-lə-tē, n
A qualitative measure of how pleasurable a
particular passage of text is to read, based
on its typography. Often confused with
legibility, which has to do with typographic
clarity. In order to be readable, a line of type
must fi rst be legible; however, distinguish-
ing one letterform or word from another
does not automatically result in readability. A
novel set in condensed type, for example,
might be perfectly legible but nevertheless
unreadable. Readable typography is a func-
tion of numerous factors, including type size,
letter spacing, leading, and, of course, the
typeface itself.

RAG
ˈrag, n
The irregular shape created between a block
of text and the adjacent margin as a result
of uneven line lengths. For ush-left type,
the rag is along the right margin, while for
ush-right type, the rag is along the left
margin. Justifi ed type has no rag. In order to
ensure readability, typographers and design-
ers strive for a rather random-looking rag,
avoiding visual distractions that come from
geometric or overly rhythmic rags.

QUOTATION MARKS
kwō-ˈtā-shən ˈmärks, n
Punctuation marks that serve a variety of
purposes, such as indicating speech or a
direct quotation within a block of text, or to
suggest ironic or unusual usage of a word
or phrase (e.g., The “simple” application
took 30 minutes to complete). Typographic
quotes, sometimes called smart quotes,
are shaped differently from typewriter-style
quotes (often referred to as dumb quotes or
neutral quotes) and the double prime symbol
used to denote inches and in mathematical
notation. In the United States, double quota-
tion marks are the standard; in other parts of
the world, single quotation marks serve the
same purpose. See also apostrophe.
