SUBSCRIPT
ˈsəb-ˌskript, n
A character set in a size smaller than the main
text, generally centered along the baseline.
Subscripts, also called inferiors, are often
used in mathematical notation and various
scientifi c expressions. Subscripts created
from scaled-down versions of a typeface’s
standard characters will have a stroke weight
lighter than the surrounding type, which can
be distracting. As a rule, therefore, typogra-
phers and designers prefer to use a font’s
special subscript characters whenever they
are available.

SUBHEAD
ˈsəb-ˌhed, n
A lower-level heading used to break a lengthy
text into sections, revealing its organizational
structure and providing cues about its hier-
archy. The way a publication’s subheads are
typeset, including its size, color, typeface,
and placement, should refl ect the degree to
which one level is similar to or different from
those “above” and “below” it in the overall
hierarchy. If level-A subheads are used for the
names of major cities, for example, and level-B
subheads have to do with different categories
of census data, it would be reasonable for
the two subheads to look quite different from
one another. If, on the other hand, the level-B
subheads were used for the names of nearby
suburbs, the difference in their appearance
might be subtler.

STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY/IMAGES
ˈstäk fə-ˈtä-grə-fē/ˈi-mi-jəz, n
Photographs and/or illustrations available,
via a licensing agreement, for specifi c uses.
Using such images is much less expensive
than hiring a photographer, although some
creative control is sacrifi ced in the process.
In addition, the designer and client can never
be sure how the same image might be used
elsewhere by others; there is no exclusive
arrangement with the provider. Today, several
online collections of stock photography and
illustrations allow for easy searching, payment,
and downloading.
