The areas along the four edges of a page that
typically frame the body copy and/or images
of a particular layout. Elements such as page
numbers, footnotes, and captions are often
printed in the margins. The margins that lie
along the spine of a bound publication are
sometimes also called the gutter.

MAKEREADY

The process by which the printing press,
as well as any fi nishing, folding, or binding
equipment, are prepared for a particular print
run. Makeready is also used to describe the
sheets of paper used, often repeatedly, as
“test cases” during this process. Such sheets
are sometimes also treated as artworks in
their own right.

A graphical sign used, typically for com-
mercial reasons, as part of an organization’s
branding. Logos represent the values and
personality of an organization. They must be
memorable and instantly recognizable, and
distinctive from those of competitors. Given
these challenges, it is not surprising that
companies will often use a successful logo
for many, many years. A logotype is a specifi c
set of letterforms, typically spelling out an
organization’s name or acronym, the details
of which (color, typeface, letter spacing,
etc.) are unique and an integral part of the
organization’s brand.
