FUTURISM
ˈfyü-chə-ˌri-zəm, n
A radical European art movement, based
largely in Italy, during the early part of the
twentieth century (approximately 1909–
1930). Futurism sought to integrate the
speed and noise of the “machine age” into
art and design. Collage and photomontage
were used to express this energy, as were
techniques suggesting cinematic motion.
Futurism’s greatest infl uence on graphic
design, however, was its use of type for its
visual impact. Multiple typefaces in a wide
range of sizes, sometimes set at odd angles
or even distorted, were often used in a single
layout, with bold and italic type suggesting
points of particular emphasis.

FOUR-COLOR PROCESS
ˈfȯr ˈkə-lər ˈprä-ˌses, n
A printing technique whereby the full spec-
trum of color is approximated by using
individual halftone screens, called color sepa-
rations, for each of the four process colors:
cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Each color
is printed as a pattern of small dots of varying
size and density. Because the four process
colors, combined in pairs, produce the addi-
tive primary colors (red, green, and blue) that
correspond to the three different types of light
receptors in the human eye, the overall effect
of “full color” is quite convincing. See also
CMYK and halftone.
