CUBISM

An early twentieth-century (roughly 1907–
1920) avant-garde European art movement
in which objects, including the human fi gure,
were often abstracted into geometric shapes.
Multiple perspectives were presented simulta-
neously, and three dimensions reduced to two,
challenging conventional rules of perspec-
tive dating back to the Renaissance. Soon,
graphic design would refl ect similar experi-
mental approaches to spatial composition
and geometric abstraction.

To trim a photograph or other piece of
artwork through either digital or mechani-
cal means, removing any unwanted portions
around its outer edges. Cropping is done to
precisely frame the contents of a photograph,
or to match the size and proportions of an im-
age to the space allotted for it within a given
layout. The small lines used to frame the
artwork for cropping are called crop marks.

COUNTER

The space enclosed, either completely (as
in the letter o) or partially (as in the letter c),
within a letterform. Counter is also some-
times used in a more general sense, referring
to the space between neighboring letter-
