DE STIJL
də-ˈstī(-ə)l, n
An early twentieth-century (1917–1931) Dutch
art and design movement concerned with
expressing universal laws through a purely
objective visual language. Colors were
limited to neutrals (black, white, gray) and
the primaries red, blue, and yellow, while
forms were restricted mostly to squares and
rectangles arranged asymmetrically along
horizontals and verticals. Sans serif type was
used almost exclusively, and was often com-
bined with blocky, hand-drawn display type.

DADA
ˈdä-(ˌ)dä, n
An artistic movement that began in Zurich,
Switzerland, and spread across Europe
as a reaction against World War I. Dada
challenged a number of traditional beliefs,
including those concerning art, morality, and
religion, with its provocative, even nonsensi-
cal, visuals (though in Germany the Dadaists’
work took on a darker and more political
tone, as Hitler rose to power in the 1930s).
Dadaist graphics suggested a broad range
of infl uences, including the organizational
approaches of Constructivism and De Stijl,
and the raw energy of collage and pho-
tomontage, a technique that the Dadaists
claimed to invent.
