LETTERFORM

The shape of an individual character, whether
or not it’s actually a letter. The common ele-
ments shared among a collection of letterforms
are what make up a typeface. Type anatomy
can be described by way of an extensive
vocabulary that includes terms such as serif,
ascender, descender, and many more.

LETTER SPACING
ˈle-tər ˈspā-siŋ, n
The overall spacing between characters
within a body of text. Letter spacing is of
particular concern when using justifi ed
type because of its propensity for distract-
ing gaps between words, especially where
the measure is short. Often confused with
letterspacing, the process of increasing the
spaces between the characters of display
type in order to create visual interest.

LEGIBILITY
ˌle-jə-ˈbi-lə-tē, n
A qualitative measure of how easily letter-
forms and words can be deciphered by the
reader/viewer. Illegible texts are also unread-
able; however, legibility does not ensure read-
ability, the ease with which one proceeds
through a passage of carefully set typogra-
phy. The need for legibility depends largely
on the context: posters and book jackets, for
example, often employ type that borders on
the illegible but is quite engaging. If the same
type were used for wayfi nding signage or an
annual report, the results would be disastrous.
