HIERARCHY

A discernable order expressed through varia-
tions in scale, placement, value, color, and
any number of other visual cues. Headings
and subheads, for example, create order
throughout lengthy publications. By arranging
elements in a hierarchical manner, design-
ers guide viewers/readers through a busi-
ness card, brochure, poster, book, or other
creative work, revealing each element in a
deliberate, thoughtful way. “Flat” hierarchies,
by contrast, tend to be less interesting and/
or confusing.
