HEADLINE
ˈhed-ˌlīn, n
A term generally associated with journal-
ism and advertising, used to describe a very
short passage of text that appears before the
body copy, suggesting something about its
nature. Because headlines “set the stage”
for the text, they are typically set in much
larger type, perhaps of a different typeface
than that used for the body. All caps, or a
combination of standard and small caps,
are frequently used for headlines, especially
in newspapers.

HEADING
ˈhe-diŋ, n
A typographical device used to break a lengthy
text into its major sections, as when chap-
ter headings are used in a book, or section
headings in a brochure or report. Headings are
frequently typeset with all caps or a combina-
tion of caps and small caps, often in bold.
Subheads are used to further break up a text
according to its organizational structure.

HANGING PUNCTUATION
ˈhaŋ-iŋ ˌpəŋk-chə-ˈwā-shən, n
Punctuation marks that are set slightly out-
side of a block of type in order to improve
visual alignment. Opening quotation marks
and bullets are sometimes set so that they
lean into the left margin, while closing quota-
tion marks and hyphens can be set into the
right margin. Hanging punctuation requires a
delicate touch, as the goal is to create clean
typography, not to draw attention to specifi c
elements. Non-punctuation characters are
also sometimes set beyond the bounds of
a given block of type in the pursuit of visual
alignment, as when a footnote or citation
reference mark is included in a column of
decimal-aligned numbers. These are called
hanging characters.
