ART DECO
ärt de-(ˌ)kō, n
A style that combined the decorative tenden-
cies of Art Nouveau with the spare geometric
forms and abstraction of Modernism, Art
Deco was popular during the 1920s and
1930s in the United States and throughout
much of Europe. Blending a wide range
of infl uences, including Aztec and Native
American art, Egyptian ziggurats, Cubism,
and more, the Art Deco style was celebrated
in architecture, interior and product design,
and graphic design. Bold graphics were often
combined with equally bold, stylized type.

AQUEOUS COATING
ˈā-kwē-əs, a- kō-tiŋ, n
A water-based coating applied to an entire
sheet of paper, following printing, to produce
an overall sheen (e.g., glossy or matte) and
protect the underlying ink from scuffi ng and
moisture. Uncoated papers tend to absorb
ink, thereby softening the look of printed
images, whereas coated papers prevent ink
from being absorbed, thus allowing images to
remain crisp. Aqueous coatings are typically
used for printed materials that receive exten-
sive handling, such as magazines and bro-
chures. Other coatings, such as varnishes,
are used for similar purposes to produce a
variety of coated papers.

APOSTROPHE
ə-ˈpäs-trə-(ˌ)fē, n
In the English language, apostrophes generally
serve two functions: to mark omissions (e.g.,
’80s to indicate the 1980s) and to indicate the
possessive forms of nouns (e.g., the cat’s toy)
and many pronouns (e.g., everybody’s prob-
lem). Proper usage can be confusing because
the same punctuation mark is also used as a
single quotation mark. Apostrophes have a
shape that curves or angles downward and to
the left, and should not be confused with the
straight apostrophe associated with typewrit-
ers, or the prime symbol used to denote units
of measure (e.g., 2' to indicate 2 feet) and in
mathematical notation.
