FIGURE-GROUND
ˈfi-gyər-ˈgrau̇nd, adj
An aspect of visual perception based on
the relationship between a form, such as a
gure, an object, a geometric shape, or a
letterform, and its surroundings: A form is
distinguishable only when set against a back-
ground different from itself. By carefully ma-
nipulating this inherent relationship, designers
can create compelling visuals from even the
most basic forms. This can be especially
important in the design of logos, where much
content needs to be distilled into a relatively
simple, easily identifi ed mark. Stable fi gure-
ground relationships tend to have an easily
identifi ed focal point and a harmonious feel,
whereas ambiguous fi gure-ground relation-
ships challenge viewers’ perceptions. Used
appropriately, each can be very effective. See
also positive space and negative space.
