LITHOGRAPHY

A printing process in which ink is applied to a
smooth stone or metal plate, from which it is
then transferred onto paper. The name comes
from the Greek lithos, meaning “stone,” and
grapho, meaning “to write.” In lithography, an
oil-based medium, such as crayon, is used to
mark on the stone or metal, defi ning the areas
where the ink, which is water-based, will be
either accepted or rejected. Unmarked areas
of the plate “hold” the ink and transfer it to the
paper, whereas oily areas repel the ink and
thereby become the background of the fi nal

LINE LENGTH

The distance across an individual line of type.
Line length is often confused with measure,
the width of the column itself. However,
when type is set fl ush-left (or rag-right), for
example, the lines of type only rarely fi ll the
full measure. The same is true of fl ush-left
and centered type. Only in cases of justifi ed
type does the line length correspond to
the measure.
