BARREL FOLD
ˈber-əl fōld, n
Alternating parallel folds made to a sheet of
paper so that the resulting series of panels
fold in, or “rolls up,” on one another. In order
for each panel to nest properly, outer panels
are progressively wider (measured from fold-
to-fold or edge-to-fold) than adjacent panels
closer to the interior. Also called roll fold.

BALANCE

The visual relationship among design ele-
ments within a particular context. A layout
is said to have balance when the shapes,
proportions, textures, colors, and values
of each element work to create a sense of
visual harmony. Balanced layouts need not be
conservative, however. In fact, the sensitive
designer can use balance to activate spaces
throughout an entire layout, thereby creating
a more engaging experience for the audience.

ASYMMETRY
ā-ˈsi-mə-trē, n
The organization of design elements such
that they are distributed unevenly with
respect to a layout’s primary horizontal and
vertical axes. Asymmetry can also be used
to describe a spread in which the facing
pages are not mirror images of each other.
Effective asymmetrical layouts achieve bal-
ance through the careful interplay of positive
space and negative space, and tend to be
more dynamic than symmetrical layouts.
