A term used to describe an image of inferior
quality, often a low-resolution version of the
image to be used in the fi nal version of the
layout, that serves as a placeholder in a lay-
out. By designating such images “FPO,” their
limited function is immediately understood
by other members of the design team.

fonts also include special characters once
the domain of expert sets. For cast metal
and wood type, fonts are size-specifi c; digital
type, on the other hand, can be reduced or
enlarged with the click of a mouse. Although
font and typeface are often used interchange-
ably, there is a clear distinction: Typeface
refers to the overall design of a set of charac-
ters; fonts are the means of production, either
physical or digital.

FOIL STAMPING

A process by which a thin plastic fi lm is
fused to paper by way of a heated die, often
used to emphasize logos, illustrations, type,
or other design elements. The plastic fi lm
is available in a wide range of colors and
sheens, as well as metallic fi nishes. Opaque
fi lm can be used to apply a light color to a
dark background; translucent fi lm can be
used to simulate varnish. Also called foil
block or hot foil stamp.
