COLOR PALETTE

A set of colors defi ned either by a particular
media, such as the 216-color Web-safe color
palette, or by a designer or an artist, for a
specifi c project. Custom color palettes are of-
ten created using the relationships illustrated
by the color wheel.

COLOR MODEL
ˈkə-lər ˈmä-dəl, n
A system by which color is defi ned abso-
lutely (i.e., independent of the device used
to display or print it) by way of just a few
color components that, when adjusted, can
be used to create a broad spectrum of color.
RGB and CMYK are two common color
models, although others exist as well. HSB,
for example, uses color characteristics as-
sociated with the traditional color wheel: hue,
saturation, and brightness (as shown here
via the Munsell color system). The LAB color
model is based on the coordinates used in
colorimetry. Color model is often confused
with color space, which is the range of color
produced by a particular display or printing
device within a specifi c color model.

COLOR-MATCHING SYSTEM
ˈkə-lər ˈma-chiŋ ˈsis-təm, n
Any one of a handful of standard references,
typically available as color charts or color
swatches, each with a corresponding numeric
designation, used for the precise specifi cation
of color. Designers use these designations to
ensure that the colors intended for a particular
project are “translated” correctly during the
printing phase. For precise color matching,
it is important to know which color-matching
system(s) a printing service supports.
