COMPLEMENTARY COLORS
käm-plə-ˈmen-t(ə-)rē ˈkə-lərz, n
Colors that are opposite each other on the
color wheel, as, for example, red and green
are on the pigment color wheel. Also called
contrasting colors. Using complementary
colors together in a design can be overwhelm-
ing. More common is a split complementary
scheme, in which one color is used together
with the two colors that fl ank its complement
on the color wheel.

COLUMN
kä-ləm, n
As the areas of a page layout where text is
placed, columns often form the basic build-
ing blocks of a layout’s grid. For text-heavy
layouts, two or more columns are frequently
used. Tall rectangular columns are perhaps
the most common, but various other styles
can be found as well.

COLOR WHEEL
ˈkə-lər ˈhwēl, n
The color spectrum represented as segments
of a circle. The most common color wheel,
used for mixing pigments, has as its founda-
tion the primary colors red, yellow, and blue,
equally spaced along the circumference.
Red, yellow, and blue are pure colors; they
cannot be created by combining other colors.
By mixing them together in various propor-
tions, however, all other colors on the color
wheel can be made. Other color wheels are
used to illustrate similar relationships within
other color systems, such as the RGB model
used to display screen graphics. See also
analogous colors, complementary colors,
primary colors, secondary colors, and
tertiary colors.
