MONOCHROMATIC

Having a color palette comprised of shades
and tints of a single hue. In monochromatic
images, tonal variation is represented by way
of differences in saturation and brightness.
Grayscale images are monochromatic im-
ages with a color palette comprised of grays,
white, and black.

MOIRÉ
mȯ-ˈrā, n
An undesirable effect that can occur when
the halftone screens used in four-color print-
ing are aligned in such a way that a discern-
able pattern emerges. To prevent moiré, the
screens are rotated at specifi c angles relative
to one another, resulting in tiny CMYK ro-
settes, which are rarely noticeable in the fi nal
printing. Moiré can also occur when a printed
image is digitally scanned without applying
the descreening feature. See also halftone.

MODERNISM

More a collection of movements than a single
movement, Modernism fi rst took root around
1907 with Cubism and its rejection of natural
forms in favor of abstraction. In the subse-
quent hundred-plus years, Modernist design
has been interpreted and reinterpreted around
the world, taking on a great range of diverse
forms, some more closely aligned with its
mythology (e.g., strict use of grids, sans
serif type, generous white space, etc.) than
others. For every “rule” of Modernism, count-
less exceptions exist. Nevertheless, com-
mon threads can be found, among them an
emphasis on functional visual communication
and a forward-looking, often optimistic spirit.
