Any portion of a lowercase letterform that ex-
tends above the x-height of a given typeface
to the ascent line. The relative size and weight
of ascenders varies by typeface; those with
larger x-heights tend to have more subtle

tend to have more prominent ascenders. See

ARTS AND CRAFTS
ärts ən(d) ˈkrafts, n
A reform movement begun in England in the
late nineteenth century as a reaction to the
Industrial Revolution and its emphasis on
mass production at the expense of aesthet-
ics. In graphic design, the Arts and Crafts
movement was epitomized in the books of
William Morris. Although his use of decora-
tive capitals, Gothic typefaces, and heavy
layouts recall printed works from centuries
earlier, Morris’s emphasis on reuniting design
and production activities set the stage for
twentieth-century Modernism.

ART NOUVEAU
ärt nü-ˈvō, n
A highly decorative style of architecture and
design prevalent throughout much of Europe
between the 1880s and the outbreak of World
War I, and for a short time in the United
States. Art Nouveau, as the name implies,
aimed to create an entirely new aesthetic,
rejecting the chaotic clutter of the Victorian
era in favor of organic, curvaceous forms.
Popular motifs included plants and animals
(especially birds), as well female fi gures, often
depicted with a level of abstraction far greater
than was common in Victorian graphics.
