SHEET SIZES
ˈshēt ˈsīz-əz, n
In North America, standard sheet sizes are
specifi ed in such a way that multiple 8½ ×
11-inch sheets can be produced from them
with a minimal amount of waste. A 23 ×
35-inch sheet, for example, could be used
to produce a sixteen-page signature×
11 inches in size after trimming. Outside of
North America, the International Standards
Organization (ISO) has established sheet
sizes based on one square meter.

SERIF
ˈser-əf, n
A small stroke at the end of a character’s
main strokes. Serif is also commonly used
when referring to a broad range of typefaces
with serifs (though they are more correctly
called seriffed typefaces), so as to distinguish
them from an equally broad category of those
without, called sans serif typefaces. Serifs
aid in reading type, especially at small sizes,
in part because they allow the eye to quickly
distinguish one letterform from another.
Serifs originated in ancient Rome, although
the details are the subject of debate: Some
suggest that they originated with stone
masons, who used them to “clean up” the
strokes of their chiseled type, while others
suggest they were fl ourishes created by the
paintbrushes used to mark out the letterforms
prior to cutting. See also sans serif.
