CMYK
Abbreviation for cyan, magenta, yellow,
and black, the ink colors used in four-color
process printing. When combined in pairs,
the subtractive primary colors cyan, magenta,
and yellow reproduce the additive primary
colors red, green, and blue, which correspond
to the three different types of light receptors
in the human eye. In theory, the three sub-
tractive primaries combine to produce black;
in practice, however, the result is not rich
enough to produce a full range of tones for
color printing, which is why black is included
separately. Also called process colors.

The digital information corresponding to
the relative quantities of the three (for RGB)
or four (for CMYK) primary colors used to
represent color images. Each channel is like a
grayscale image in which the values of gray
have been replaced with values of a single
primary color. The fi nal color image is cre-
ated, either on-screen or in print, by combin-
ing all channels of a given color model.
