A term used to describe a typeface in which
the width of each character is unique, unlike
monospaced typefaces, in which all charac-
ters are of the same width.

PROOF
ˈprüf, n
A general term used when referring to a pre-
liminary version of a book, report, brochure,
or other document intended for publica-
tion. Proofs serve a variety of purposes,
from copyediting and proofreading to the
promotional, as when a book proof is sent
to reviewers in advance of its publication.
Traditionally a collection of unbound and
untrimmed pages, electronic proofs are now
becoming increasingly common. When cast
metal type was still in common use, the initial
typesetting was done in metal trays prior to
being set on the press itself. Because these
trays were called galleys, the resulting prints
were called galley proofs, a term still used by
some when referring to early proofs. Contract
proofs are used to confi rm details such as
color just prior to printing.

PRIMARY COLORS
ˈprī-ˌmer-ē ˈkə-lərz, n
Colors that form the key reference points of
a given color wheel, equally spaced along
its circumference. In the traditional color
wheel, used for mixing pigments, the prima-
ries are red, blue, and yellow. However, other
color wheels are based on the subtractive
primaries cyan, magenta, and yellow, and
the additive primaries red, green, and blue.
