POST-MODERNISM

Largely a reaction against the often-dogmatic
approach of Modernism, Post-Modernism
began to take shape during the 1960s and
rose to international prominence in the 1980s.
Where the Modernists had largely rejected
the past, the Post-Modernists celebrated his-
torical styles and their decorative tendencies,
reinterpreting and combining them in unex-
pected, often playful ways. Visual character-
istics included letterspaced typography, the
seemingly random placement of elements,
intricate collage, pastel color palettes, and
much more.

POSTERIZATION
ˌpōs-tə-rə-ˈzā-shən, n
An effect that occurs when the range of
colors (or grays) available is insuffi cient to
reproduce, either on-screen or in print, an
image that contains areas of gradual tonal
change. This can happen when, for example,
an image is converted to a 256-color GIF for
use as a simple Web graphic. Posterization
can also be done deliberately using image-
editing software to convert continuous tones
into a limited number of discrete color fi elds,
thereby creating interesting visual effects simi-
lar to those seen in traditional graphic posters.

POSITIVE SPACE
ˈpä-zə-tiv ˈspās, n
A generic term used to describe the area(s) of
a layout or individual design element(s) where
forms exist (the resulting voids are referred to
as negative space). Although positive space
is often used to describe aspects of entire
layouts, it can also be used to describe as-
pects of typography, where letterforms gen-
erate relationships of positive and negative
space with neighboring letterforms. Logos,
because they are generally small, are often
designed with careful attention paid to the
relationship between positive and negative
