DUOTONE
ˈdü-(ˌ)ōˌtōn, n
A grayscale image printed using two colors
of ink rather than one. Although black often
remains the primary ink, two non-black inks
can also be used. Using black as the primary
ink and a shade of gray as the secondary
ink results in a tonal variation more closely
approximating that of black-and-white
photography. Using a non-neutral color as
the secondary ink, or using two non-neutral
colors together, allows for many interesting
visual effects, from the subtle to the dramatic.
Tritones are grayscale images printed with
three colors.

DROP CAPITAL/CAP
ˈdräp ˈka-pə-təl/ˈkap, n
An uppercase letter used as the initial letter
of the fi rst word in a paragraph, set in a point
size larger than the surrounding type so that
it extends into the text below. For additional
impact, drop caps may be set in a typeface
much different from that used for the body
copy. They are specifi ed in terms of how many
lines of type they occupy. A three-line drop
cap, for example, occupies the fi rst, second,
and third lines of a paragraph. See also initial
capital/cap and standing capital/cap.

DITHER
ˈdi-thər, v
A method of approximating the true colors
of a digital image using only those colors
available in a given color palette. When a
color digital image is converted to web-safe
colors, for example, a specifi c set of 216
different colors (the Web-safe color palette) is
used to approximate the colors of the original
image. This is done by way of a “patchwork”
of pixels in the case of computer monitors, or
dots in the case of digital printers. A patch-
work of blue and yellow pixels/dots could
be used to approximate green, for instance.
Although some detail is sacrifi ced in the
process, dithering can be useful for smooth-
ing out the unwanted jagged edges that can
appear along adjacent fi elds of color. See
also posterization.
