VARNISH

A clear coating applied to paper as part of the printing process,
generally done after all inks have been printed. As with other coatings,
varnishes provide some protection against handling, but are more
often used for their aesthetic benefi ts, as they provide various sheens
ranging from dull to high gloss. Varnishes applied to specifi c areas are
called spot varnishes; those that are applied to entire pages are called
fl ood varnishes.
