OVERPRINTING
ˌō-vər-ˈprin-tiŋ, n
The blending of inks printed on top of each
other in such a way that a new color results.
In most cases when two design elements
overlap, only the color of the “upper” ele-
ment is printed; its color knocks out that of
anything “below.” When overprinting is done,
on the other hand, the two or more colors of
ink are combined to form another color. In
this example, yellow was applied to the entire
piece, followed by magenta, applied to all but
the yellow type, and fi nally cyan, to the areas
without type.

OUTLINE TYPE
ˈau̇t-ˌlīn ˈtīp, n
A typeface in which characters are designed
as outlined forms rather than as a collection
of solid strokes. Outlines can also be created
for typefaces not available in outline versions
by using software applications such as Adobe
Illustrator
®
. The resulting Bézier curves can
be scaled up or down without loss of sharp-
ness; however, the type’s correct proportions
will be lost in the process.

ORPHAN
ˈȯr-fən, n
One or two lines of a paragraph that are sepa-
rated from the main paragraph, set either at
the bottom (if they begin the paragraph) or top
(if they end the paragraph) of a column of text.
Orphans can be avoided through several tech-
niques, the most common of which are letter
spacing and hyphenation. See also widow.
