PATH
ˈpath, n
A series of Bézier curves, or vectors, used
by graphic design software to describe the
shapes of various design elements, including
type. Because they are vectors, paths can be
enlarged dramatically without sacrifi cing reso-
lution. User-defi ned paths are commonly used
to “cut out” a specifi c part of one digital photo
and place it into another, as when a person is
“Photoshopped” into or out of a photo.

PAGINATION
ˌpa-jə-ˈnā-shən, n
The numbering of pages so as to indicate their
proper sequence in a book or other printed
publication. More generally, pagination can be
used when referring simply to the total number
of pages in a given publication. And recently
the term has taken on yet another meaning, as
when it is used to describe the way informa-
tion is organized, and navigation is conducted,
on Web pages. Blogs, for example, may be
paginated in such a way that only the fi rst
paragraph or two of a post is displayed on the
main page, or so that no more than ten com-
ments appear following the original post to
which they refer. See also imposition.

PACKAGING DESIGN
ˈpa-ˌki-jiŋ di-ˈzīn, n
From the perspective of a graphic designer,
package design involves the creation of en-
closures that protect and showcase products
during their distribution, storage, sales, and
use stages. Logos, logotypes, and other
visual (and tactile) elements of branding play
a critical role in package design, although
aesthetic considerations may be just the
beginning. Other factors include safety (as in
child-resistant pill bottles), economics (taking
into account the number of boxes that will fi t
into a standard shipping container), and ease
of use (allowing the end user to open the
package in such a way that the experience
will be a pleasurable one), to name just a few.
