LEADING
ˈle-diŋ, n
The distance between successive lines of
type, measured from baseline to baseline
and specifi ed in points. The name comes
from the strips of lead used for spacing lines
of cast metal type. Unlike metal type, digital
type can be set with negative leading, which
means that the point size of the type exceeds
the point size of the leading. Although read-
ability suffers, negative leading can be used
to create dramatic effects for advertising
graphics, posters, and the like.
