INITIAL CAPITAL/CAP

A decorative uppercase letter used as the initial letter of a paragraph’s
fi rst word, generally set in a size larger than the surrounding type. Initial
caps may also be of a different typeface and/or printed in a different
color to create additional visual interest. Among the many variations
commonly used are drop caps and standing caps. As with swashes,
initial caps should be used sparingly, even in lengthy publications.
