A process of relief printing that dates back to fi fteenth-century
Germany and the invention of the printing press. Blocks of type and
illustrative elements, created in “reverse” so that their images read
correctly when transferred to the paper, are locked into place on
the press. Their surfaces are covered with ink and they are pressed
evenly against the paper. Once done with cast metal and wooden
type, letterpress work today typically incorporates a polymer plate
created from a digital fi le.
