The typographic process of adjusting the
point size and leading of type so that it
fi ts into a defi ned area or across a specifi ed
number of pages. Calculations can be used
to provide estimates, or the process can be
done in an iterative fashion, using page-layout
software, until the correct fi t is achieved.

CONTRAST

At its most basic level, contrast is nothing
more than the difference between two design
elements. Large type, for example, can be
used to contrast with small type; the greater
the difference in type size, the greater the
contrast. Used effectively, contrast can create
visually interesting layouts. Textures, colors,
shapes, line weights, and other elements can
be used to create contrast. See also balance,
complementary colors, and fi gure-ground.

CONSTRUCTIVISM
kən-ˈstrək-ti-ˌvi-zəm, n
A Russian movement of the 1920s that inte-
grated avant-garde art and design (especially
the infl uences of Cubism and Futurism) with
pro-Revolution political leanings. Key visual
characteristics included abstract, geometric
forms and bold type, layouts that broke with
horizontal/vertical conventions, and a color
palette often limited to red, black, and white.
Collage and photomontage, techniques bor-
rowed from Dada, were also used to create
powerful visual communication design.
