ROMAN TYPE
ō-ˈmäⁿ ˈtīp, n
Used to refer to a broad range of typefaces
having serifs and origins dating to fi fteenth-
century Italy. Roman is also used more gen-
erally to describe the “regular” version of a
typeface with or without serfi s, as opposed
to the bold and italic versions, for example,

RIVERS
ˈri-vərz, n
The visually distracting vertical gaps that can
appear in a block of text as a result of the
unintentional vertical alignment of spaces be-
tween words. Rivers tend to occur in blocks
of justifi ed type because of the often-unnat-
ural software-generated word spacing. The
best way to eliminate or reduce the impact of
rivers is to rewrap the lines of type by way of
tracking and/or hyphenation. See also H&J
and text wrapping.
