GRID
ˈgrid, n
A network made up of intersecting lines,
most often running horizontally and vertically.
Grids are used to organize design elements
and provide a consistent structure to layouts.
Especially useful for large projects, they can
permit designers to work effi ciently, virtually
eliminating arbitrary decisions. On the other
hand, grids are often criticized for stifl ing
creativity or critical thinking. Used effectively,
grids serve as “scaffolding,” providing an
underlying support structure that allows
the designer more freedom, not less.
